ASAP's Course on English as a Second Language
ASAP’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program offers English instruction and practice for non-native speakers at all levels of language proficiency. All classes are held at Shurangama Monastery in the Gold Coast, allowing students to learn in a Buddhist environment (accommodation available) while living harmoniously, eating a harmless plant-based diet and enjoying the beautiful beaches and natural surroundings of Queensland, Australia.

ESL Program Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand English verbal communication in a variety of contexts.
2. Speak on a variety of topics in social and work-related contexts.
3. Use increasingly complex grammatical patterns.
4. Use word analysis, vocabulary development strategies and reading strategies to comprehend texts on familiar topics.
5. Write a variety of correspondence and produce coherent short pieces of writing.
Course Contents
Foundations-General English Classes
General English classes are adapted to appropriate levels of student proficiency and provide instruction in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Conversation
Join with other students in a stress-free session of Australian English conversation. Learn conversational styles and idiom usage. Increase your knowledge of daily-use vocabulary in various social settings.
Practical Reading & Vocabulary
Develop and practice reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, and decoding a variety of texts. Improve dictionary-using skills. Increase your vocabulary through word analysis, e.g., studying stems and affixes. Learn to guess at the meaning of new words from contextual clues.
Pronunciation of UK/Australian English
This pronunciation course is designed for non-native English speakers. The workshop help students improve their ability to be understood by mastering key UK/Australian English standard sounds in a conversational approach.
Writing
Learn about the writing process and how to develop paragraphs. Linguistic accuracy will be refined through a review of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and writing styles.
Course Outline
The course is delivered face to face, 20+ hours per week over 5 days, 8:30am to 10.30am & 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
Fees
For each week, tuition is $330 AUD plus $140 AUD per week for dormitory accommodation including lunch. Additional costs for materials is $100 AUD plus an application/deposit fee of $200 AUD. All fees are subject to change without notice. Application/deposit fees are non-refundable.
