FALL--THE METAL ELEMENT

The forces of autumn create dryness in Heaven and metal on earth; they create the lung organ and the skin upon the body...and the nose, the white color and the pungent flavor, the emotion grief, and the ability to make a weeping sound.                                                 ---The medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor

Venerable Master Hsuan Hua says, "Autumn is associated with metal. At this time we should not eat too many pungent (hot, spicy) things. If we eat too many pungent things in autumn, we will injure our lungs. In the fall, all things in nature begin to contract and move their essence inward and downward. Grains ripen, leaves fall, seeds dry and hillsides being to lose their green color. It is the harvest season, a time to gather and store food and plan for the approaching coldness of winter. Fall is a transition stage: 'yang(warmth) disappearing and yin (coldness) lengthening.' After the 'white dew' , the rain slackens off and the weather becomes drier. It is hot during the day and cold at night. Winds and cold air can invade the body, making it easy to catch a cold or the flu, thus "fall of many problems." Protect yourself well, and do not wear too much or too little.

Healing with Whole Foods suggests offsetting the dryness of fall by decreasing the intake of hot, spicy foods, which disperse the energy and cause coldness in the body. One should eat more foods that moisten the body such as soybean products, barley, millet, pear, apple, persimmon, loquat ,seaweeds, black and white fungus, potatoes, sweet potatoes, almond, pine nut, peanut, sesame seed, barley malt, rice syrup and a little salt in cooking to moisten dryness. Consideration should be given to eating fewer yin or cold foods such as salads. Watermelons, muskmelons, and papayas should be avoid int he fall, because they deplete the yang energy in the body and harm the spleen and stomach.
